What Does A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Do?
What is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner?
A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. They complete both nursing and advanced psychiatric training; usually a master’s or doctoral degree, and are nationally board certified to prescribe medications and provide therapy.
What a PMHNP Can Do
PMHNPs are licensed to provide comprehensive psychiatric care, including:
Assessment and Diagnosis- Evaluating symptoms of anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and other conditions.
Medication Management- Prescribing and adjusting medications to improve mood, focus, and functioning.
Psychotherapy- Providing supportive or cognitive-behavioral approaches alongside medication.
Collaboration- Working with therapists, primary care providers, and families to coordinate care.
Education and Prevention- Helping you understand your condition, side effects, and lifestyle supports that improve recovery.
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
A typical first session lasts about 45-60 minutes and includes:
Discussion of your psychiatric history and goals
Review of past medications or treatments
A diagnostic evaluation
A collaborative treatment plan which may include medication, therapy, or both.
You’ll leave with a clear next step and a plan that evolves with your needs.
The PMHNP Approach: Clinical, Relational, and Human
Because of their nursing foundation PMHNPs emphasize empathy, education, and partnership.
They look beyond symptoms; considering lifestyle, stress, sleep, nutrition, and social factors that influence mental health.
When to See a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
Consider seeing a PMHNP if you:
Have anxiety, depression, or mood changes affecting daily life
Are unsure if medication could help
Want ongoing personalized follow up
